The Bennington College soccer team hosted a scrimmage between staff and students for alumni and parents weekend this Saturday afternoon. Students from the team played on both teams to even out the field: the teams designated by “Pinnies” and “Non-Pinnies”.
During the first half of the game both teams scored goals with Roan Clearwater on the Non-Pinnies team clearing goalie Alex Libby’s defense. The Pinnies quickly made the deficit up by scoring two points past the Non-Pinnies’ first half goalie Theo Lai.
Throughout the game students, parents and alumni were treated to grilled hot dogs and root beer floats that went quickly before the end of the game. Due to the clear blue skies and unseasonably balmy October weather, both teams took quarter water breaks and changed positions during the breaks.
“It was hotter than hell and I was sweating like a pig,” Gigi Slavec, a junior studying Poetry and Photography who played midfield wing said.
Although her team lost, she said that she’s still proud of how the Non-Pinnies played. “Everybody was passing and collaborating with each other and giving their best effort,” Slavec said.
Although in the final four minutes of play the Non-Pinnies rallied to try and surmount the wide lead, they ultimately fell to the pinnies at 1-8.
Abe Dreher, a Senior who studies Social Community Engagement and Spanish played center mid-field most of the game and credits communication to the Pinnies’ success.
“We kept talking; We kept the love going. The other team were scratching people, not us. It was all love,” Dreher said.
Dreher, who scored two of the Pinnies’ goals, said it felt great to help lead his team to victory.
“I usually do more passing than scoring, but it was good to get a few,” Dreher said, “It’s a rare occasion for me.”
The Bennington College soccer team has one regular practice a week on Fridays at 4:30, as well as a regular open scrimmage with anyone in town on Sundays at 4 o’clock.
